ABSTRACT

Objective: to analyze the efficacy of sub mucous resection of inferior turbinate for symptomatic relief of nasal obstruction

Material and Methods: sixty [60] patients were included in the study that had inferiorturbinal hypertrophy. All the patients had history offailed medical treatment. Follow up was carried out for one year for bleeding, synechie formation, nasal crusting and nasal obstruction

Results: submucusResection of hypertrophied symptomatic inferior turbinate is an effective surgical procedure with minimal intraoperative and post-operative complications and significant improvement in nasal patency

Conclusion: sub mucous resection of the hypertrophied symptomatic inferior turbinate is a very good surgical opetion for its turbinal reduction. Bleeding per-operative and post-operative is less in amount. Due to reduced chances of bone exposure bone necrosis, crusting and foul odour are minimal. As mucosa I injury is not produced neither during surgery nor during packing, so minimal chances of adhesion formation. Removal of erectile submucosal tissue is precise and under direct vision so good satisfactory nasal airway patency. We recommend use of microdebrider assisted turbinoplasty for relief of nasal obstruction due to hypertrophic inferior turbinate

ABSTRACT

To analyze the advantages of wide exposure by midfacial degloving approach for surgical excision of Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma. Fifteen [15] patients with Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma were included in the study. All were operated with midfacial degloving approach. Five cases were operated with out emobilization and 5 cases with emobilization of the feeding vessel. 5 cases were operated after temporary ligation of the external carotid artery. 15 Patients were included in the study. Excision was done with mid facial degloving approach. Results were satisfactory regarding complete excision of the tumor with less postoperative complications and recurrence [2 out of 15]. Midfacial degloving approach is an excellent approach providing wide exposure of infratemporal fossa, nasopharyx and skull base with less bleeding and no facial scar

ABSTRACT

Majority of foreign bodies of tracheobroncial tree are found in children between the ages of 1-3 years. Foreign bodies once aspirated in air passages can lodge in larynx, trachea or bronchi but most commonly in right main bronchus. The course of disease, once the foreign body has lodged in air passages, depends upon the character of foreign body and its length of stay. Undiagnosed foreign body leads to complications such as recurrent pneumonia, bronchiectasis, atelactasis and even death. We are hereby reporting a case of neglected foreign body which remained in right main bronchus undiagnosed for 5 months. Patient was suffering from recurrent attacks of coughing, haemoptysis and breathlessness especially during sleep

ABSTRACT

Background: Hoarseness is a main clinical presentation of laryngeal diseases. Our objectives are to evaluate hoarseness among various ages, in different diseases and to identify various underlying causative factors

Methods: it is an observational study of 92 cases of different diseases presented with hoarseness. These patients are of different age groups, who presented to Jinnah Hospital, Services Hospital, Lahore and Hameed Latif Hospital Lahore from July 2002 to July 2005

Results: Hoarseness is the main presenting complaint [100%] followed by difficulty in swallowing among laryngeal diseases. The incidence of hoarseness is common in the younger age group [34%]. Advanced laryngeal malignancy is presented in 37% cases

Conclusion: A plan of documentation and mass media campaign should be charted out to detect underlying causes and early diagnosis of laryngeal diseases for prevention and proper management
